The Blue Zones and the Seaweed Connection

The Blue Zones and the Seaweed Connection

Liz Atkins

Blue Zones are places around the world where people have traditionally lived unusually long, healthy lives. The original Blue Zones include Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy, Ikaria in Greece, Nicoya in Costa Rica and Loma Linda in California.

Of course, there is no single secret to a long and healthy life. But these communities do share some lovely everyday habits: simple whole foods, natural movement, a sense of purpose, strong social connections and a close connection to the land and where their food comes from.

People in Blue Zone communities commonly grow vegetables, herbs and fruit, or eat food grown close to home. Gardening is not necessarily a chore or an exercise program — it is simply part of daily life. It gets people outside, moving, bending, lifting and tending to something that will eventually nourish them. It also creates abundance to share: a bag of beans for a neighbour, herbs over the fence, or a table full of home-grown produce for family and friends.

That connection between growing, cooking and sharing food feels especially worth holding onto. Meals are often enjoyed slowly and socially, rather than rushed or eaten alone. A home-grown salad, a barbecue with friends, or a simple shared dinner can all become small moments of connection.

In Okinawa, Japan — one of the original Blue Zones — sea vegetables have long been part of the traditional diet. We love the idea of bringing a little of that sea-inspired goodness to the everyday table.
Our Wild & Briny range makes it easy to experiment. Sprinkle Wild Seaweed Salt over roasted vegetables, eggs, salads, fish or barbecue favourites... add Dulse Flakes to soups, potatoes, pasta and savoury dishes... or try one of our recipes when you feel like something a little different.

Seaweed on the table is a wonderful talking point. It is a simple way to introduce friends and family to new flavours — something delicious, interesting and a little unexpected to share at your next dinner party or barbecue. Which brings us back to the Blue Zone daily habits... strong social connections.

And for your own patch of earth, Seaperia Soluble is a pure, natural seaweed product with no added chemicals. Use it to nourish vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit trees, and enjoy the pleasure of growing something good and adding movement to your day, every day.

A garden, good food, good company and a sprinkle of seaweed — that sounds like a little Blue Zones inspiration we can all enjoy.
