Seaweed as a Bio-stimulant
Liz AtkinsShare
A plant biostimulant is a natural input that helps improve plant growth, stress tolerance and nutrient uptake — without acting as a fertiliser or pesticide. Instead of forcing growth, biostimulants support the plant’s own internal systems, helping it grow stronger, healthier and more resilient.
One of the most powerful natural biostimulants available is Ascophyllum nodosum, a North Atlantic seaweed known for its ability to support plant performance in a wide range of conditions. This species is naturally rich in a complex mix of plant-active compounds often referred to as natural growth hormones or biostimulant compounds.
These include auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins and betaines, each playing a specific role in plant development. Rather than acting alone, they work together to regulate growth, strengthen plant structure and improve the way plants respond to stress, nutrients and environmental conditions.
Auxin is the reason plants can react and adjust to external conditions without a nervous system. In living plants, auxin is required at almost every stage of development, working alongside other hormones to guide growth. Depending on the tissue, auxin may promote shoot elongation, root expansion or fruit development. The balance between auxin and other hormones, particularly cytokinins, determines whether a plant focuses on root growth or shoot growth.
Cytokinins are found naturally in all plants and are especially abundant in seaweed. They promote cell division and growth while also slowing the ageing process by reducing protein breakdown. This helps plants stay greener for longer, improving leaf function, plant strength and post-harvest quality. Crops grown with seaweed biostimulants are often firmer and store better, with improved resistance to stress and disease.
Gibberellins stimulate cell elongation and division, playing a key role in stem growth, root development, seed germination and flowering. They help plants establish quickly and continue growing even under less-than-ideal conditions.
Betaines support plant cells by improving water retention and protecting against dehydration. They help plants tolerate environmental stress such as heat, cold and salinity, while also supporting chlorophyll production and overall plant health. Stronger cells mean stronger plants, better able to resist disease and environmental pressure.
All of these plant-active compounds work together to build what you could call a “super plant” — one that is naturally more resilient to cold, heat, drought, disease and fungal attack. Roots grow longer and stronger, improving nutrient uptake and feeding beneficial soil microbes. Leaves produce more chlorophyll, supporting photosynthesis and plant energy, while stems develop strength and structure.
This flow-on effect doesn’t stop in the garden. Healthier plants support better soil biology and, when used in animal systems, can contribute to improved overall nutrition.
Seaperia is naturally rich in this full spectrum of biostimulant compounds. Combined with over 60 trace elements, natural sugars such as mannitol and laminarin, and alginates that support soil structure, it delivers a complete, natural approach to plant health.
And importantly, Seaperia is 100% pure seaweed — nothing added, nothing extracted — just a naturally powerful biostimulant working with your plants from the ground up.
